The Presidency has responded to questions surrounding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision not to attend this year’s United Nations General Assembly in New York.
On Sunday, the Presidency announced that Vice President Kashim Shettima would represent the President and lead Nigeria’s delegation at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Tinubu’s decision has generated reactions, particularly from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who questioned why the President would miss the international gathering for the third consecutive year.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Presidency representative Osodi said Tinubu’s absence would not stop Nigeria from participating actively in international affairs.
According to Osodi, Nigeria has interests across several regional and international organisations, meaning the United Nations is only one of the platforms through which the country engages with the global community.
He said the President is currently paying attention to important issues at home, particularly the economy and national security, while the country continues to participate in other international engagements.
With Vice President Shettima leading the Nigerian delegation, the Presidency says the country will still have a strong representation at the UN gathering.
The annual UN General Assembly provides an opportunity for countries to discuss major global issues, strengthen diplomatic relationships and present their positions on matters affecting the international community.
